Manqoba Mngqithi isn’t backing down from the critics who’ve been quick to judge his performance as the new head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns. The seasoned South African tactician has faced a wave of scrutiny after the club’s disappointing start under his leadership this season.
When Rulani Mokwena left for the Botola Pro League to take over at Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco, Mngqithi stepped into the spotlight as the new mentor of the Sundowns squad. Fans and analysts alike had high expectations, given the team’s recent success under Mokwena. However, things haven’t gone as smoothly as hoped.
Since Mngqithi took the helm, the Brazilians have struggled to maintain the form that made them one of the most formidable teams in the league. Their recent performances in the MTN8 competition, including a shocking elimination, have left many questioning whether he’s the right man for the job.

Mngqithi Takes a Stand Against Critics
After a tough semifinal loss to Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 tournament, the backlash on social media was swift and harsh. Fans were vocal about their dissatisfaction with the team’s performance, especially after relying on an own goal to advance past Polokwane City in the quarterfinals.
During the launch of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership, Mngqithi addressed the mounting criticism head-on. He revealed that he’s not active on social media, so he isn’t exposed to much of the negativity swirling around him.
"I don't even have social media accounts, so I can't answer questions about something I don't even see," he stated.
The coach emphasized his leadership philosophy, which centers on staying focused and tuned out from outside noise. He believes that as the leader of the team, it’s crucial to prioritize the work at hand rather than getting distracted by public opinion.
"For me, one thing I know is that when you're the leader of a pack, it's always necessary to try to move your ears away from the crowd and concentrate on what you're doing. I don't think there's any reason for anyone to believe that I can't coach Mamelodi Sundowns," he added.
Mngqithi expressed confusion over the notion that he’s unfit for the role, considering his long-standing relationship with the club. He suspects that some of the criticism might stem from ulterior motives or external influences.
"For me, I believe anyone who feels like they might be antagonistic, or maybe has problems, or maybe is sent by others to say things that suit certain people," he concluded.
"But for someone to think I'm incapable of coaching Sundowns, it would be very strange."
Khanye Weighs In on Mngqithi’s Tenure
In a separate development, former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye offered his take on Mngqithi’s situation. Known for his bold predictions, Khanye suggested that Mngqithi’s time at Sundowns might be short-lived.
Despite Mngqithi’s promise to bring a more attacking style of play to the team, Khanye believes the pressure will eventually force him out. The former star noted that Mngqithi’s promises of offensive flair haven’t translated into results, leading to skepticism about his long-term viability as head coach.
